Why You Need a Dutch Bank Account
A Dutch bank account (bankrekening) is essential for everyday life: paying rent, receiving salary, setting up direct debits for utilities, health insurance, and more. iDEAL — the Dutch online payment system — is used for almost all online payments and requires a Dutch account.
What You Need to Open an Account
Most Dutch banks require:
- Valid passport or EU ID card
- Dutch address (registered at gemeente)
- BSN (Burgerservicenummer)
- Some banks also require: employment proof, income proof
The BSN requirement is the catch — you need to register your address at the gemeente first to get a BSN, and you need a BSN to open a bank account. Plan your first week to handle both.
Major Dutch Banks
ING Bank
One of the largest Dutch banks. Good app, wide ATM network. Basic account (Oranje rekening) is free. Opens fairly quickly for expats.
Rabobank
Cooperative bank with strong customer service. Slightly more documentation required but reliable.
ABN AMRO
Traditional bank, popular with expats. Expat package available — they actively market to internationals and speak English.
Bunq
The "digital expat bank." No physical branch but opens an account in minutes online. Works without a Dutch address initially. Subscription-based (€2.99–€17.99/month). Very popular with newly arrived expats as a bridge solution.
Revolut / Wise
International digital banks. Not Dutch but widely used. Great for multi-currency and lower fees. Not a substitute for a Dutch bank for rent/salary but useful alongside one.
Opening Process
Traditional banks (ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO):
1. Book an appointment online (often 1–3 week wait)
2. Bring passport + proof of address + BSN
3. Account opened same day; card arrives in 5–7 working days
Bunq:
1. Download app, complete identity verification (passport scan + selfie)
2. Account active within minutes
3. Dutch IBAN issued — works for iDEAL, salary, rent
iDEAL Explained
iDEAL is the dominant Dutch online payment system. When you check out on almost any Dutch website, you'll see iDEAL as an option. It redirects you to your online banking app for instant payment. Without a Dutch bank account, you cannot use iDEAL — which makes shopping, paying utilities, and renting very difficult.
DigiD — Your Digital Identity
DigiD is the Dutch government's digital identity system. You need it to:
- Access your tax portal (Belastingdienst)
- Apply for zorgtoeslag (healthcare benefit)
- Log into government services
Apply at digid.nl immediately after getting your BSN. You'll receive an activation code by post within 5 days.
